Choosing the right paint for your property

Painters and Decorators London • May 21, 2022

As much as a new painting and decorating job can enhance the look and feel of your property for the better, choosing the wrong paint colour and finish  can make your home darker, colder and appear much smaller than it is. Therefore, choosing the right type of paint is absolutely critical. If you are looking to redecorate your property, our key ideas and suggestions on choosing the right colours will help guarantee that you are prepared and pick the best colour for your room! Do remember one thing, you are not alone in this. We are a professional painting company based in London and are available to help you with all queries or tasks you may need help with.

Many inexperienced decorators do not realise, but the orientation of your room can be a crucial factor in the colour scheme you adopt.

  • North facing – Rooms that face North tend to receive less sunlight and are shaded and cool. This essentially means that you must prevent painting your walls a cool colour as this will make your room feel much colder than it is. You should always opt for colours with warm-hearted hints. If you have a natural palette, you will want to go for more yellow or pink tones instead of greys or blues. If you want to opt for more bolder schemes, we recommend yellow or pink tones but in a brighter shade as this will look much more aesthetic and beautiful. Red and purple tones also work great too!

  • South facing – in south facing rooms, you will get lots of natural light and sunlight, therefore cooler colours and shades work much better to give your room the perfect colour balance it needs. Regardless of your choice of bright, neutral or pastel shades, always opt for cooler undertones.

  • East & West facing – an east facing room will have much warmer light in the morning and gradually will get cooler as the day goes on, whereas a west facing room will be cooler in the morning and gradually get warmer as the day goes on. Due to this, you can choose the same types of colours for but do bear in mind they will look distinct depending on what time you look at the room. We recommend balancing the light by using neutral colours with undertones of green & blue or using an intense bright colour that will allow the light to enhance it beautifying your room.

Many inexperienced decorators do not realise, but the orientation of your room can be a crucial factor in the colour scheme you adopt.

Another important question to ask yourself is how much time do you spend in that specific room? Majority of people choose colours based on natural light, however, if you are only using one room at night-time and not necessarily during the day, then we would recommend picking colours that look great in artificial light which also help with better sleep quality.

Once you have solved both of those questions, you must also take into consideration the room that you are painting as this may affect your colour choices. For example, if you have a room such as the living room, or dining room which may suit a bright colour, it may be too bright for going to sleep in a bedroom.

Lastly, the finish of paint that you use cannot be neglected. It has the power to make or break the appearance that you will want to achieve for the room. The finish of the paint refers to how it looks once it has dried and when utilising emulsion, you have a small number of options available. The main ones are matte or silk finish.

Matte paint is quite dull and does not have much of a shine. It dries into a smooth finish which lets you hide any blemishes on the walls such as small holes and can also blend in with any style or colour palette. Silk paint, however, dries onto a surface in such a way that it attracts light in a delicate way. It is also shiny and easily washable unlike a matte finish. Matte paint is normally used in rooms that have guests, but the downsides are you do not get a velvety finish. Nevertheless, it is the easiest kind of paint to touch up and even brings a deeper hue to your chosen colour as opposed to a silk finish. Silk paint, on the other hand, makes colours stand out, particularly if they are already bright. It’s not likely to get dirty due to its shiny and smooth surface which makes it an excellent option for kids' rooms. Nevertheless, it is much harder to apply efficiently, and we recommend this paint to be used in rooms concealed from visitors due to how complicated it can be to achieve a faultless look when painting the room.
