How to Reduce the Cost of your Decorating Project

At painters and decorators London, we are all about offering great value for money. With that said, we want to offer our readers some amazing tips that can really help to reduce the cost of your decorating project, so that when you are ready to call in the professionals, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg!

One of the most obvious ways to reduce the cost of project is to think about the scope of the works that you want doing. Ask yourself if there are small elements of the work that you can complete on your own. For example, incidental items such as painting a cupboard that no one will see, or painting a spare bedroom that doesn’t get used will reduce the amount of work required and reduce your overall bill.

On the flip side of that, if you want the most bang for your buck, then consider getting more work done at the same time to achieve the greatest value for money. Whilst the overall price of the project may be higher, the actual hourly rate that you pay will be lower, as most decorators will be willing to lower the unit rate for a larger volume of work.

Split your project into stages – if you don’t have the capital available to get all your work carried out in one go, then consider splitting the job into phases. This will break down the cost of the work into manageable chunks, most decorators will not be able to offer a finance option, so this is the closest way to achieve that. If possible, try to get the same decorator to manage all phases of the work. If you do this, then you can lock in a price for the entire job, whilst still breaking down the costs.

If your decorator only has to come in and paint, then there will be less labour involved, which means a lower overall price for you.

Make sure the prep work is taken care of - if you can, try and make sure that the preparation of your job is taken care of prior to calling in a professional decorator. Small things like moving furniture, covering carpets and filling and sanding imperfections can go a long way to reducing the time and associated cost of the job. If your decorator only has to come in and paint, then there will be less labour involved, which means a lower overall price for you. If you have just moved into a new property, make sure to get the decorating gets work done prior to installing carpets and flooring. If the decorator doesn’t have to worry about laying dust sheets throughout the house, then this will lead to a quicker job with less cost.

Consider the specification – you want to choose high quality paints, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to break the bank choosing the most prestigious paint on the market. Most modern trade paints that are available have great quality, even if they aren’t the most expensive on the shelf. Higher price does not necessarily mean higher quality, so make sure to ask your decorator what paint they are using. Alternatively, consider buying the materials yourself so you know you are getting a good deal. In addition, wallpaper can be an expensive choice of material and it is also labour intensive to install correctly. Limit wallpaper to feature walls to reduce the cost of your room decoration, whilst still making the most of enhancing your space.

Hopefully, the tips provided will help you to consider ways in which you can save money whilst achieving your dream home renovation. If you need further advice, then get in touch with our painters and decorators in London, who will be more than happy to help!
